Nathaniel VerGow, a former leader at the Los Angeles County Homeless Services Authority, is now in his third month as Multnomah County’s Homeless Services director.
VerGow started his new job as one of the most visible directors in town in May without total support from the county board, which approved his selection 3-2.
Commissioners Vince Jones-Dixon and Shannon Singleton cast the two no votes. Jones-Dixon said he was concerned about VerGow not being “the right fit” and Singleton said she worried about hiring a new director months before residents elect a new county chair. Nevertheless, VerGow is now in charge of the county’s 98-person Homeless Services Department and its $242 million budget.
