The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners voted July 20 to allocate up to $510 million to the Board of Education, according to a press release from the county. New buildings are coming. Campus upgrades, too. Funds will construct a new E.E. Smith High School, rebuild J.W. Coon Elementary, and tackle maintenance work across dozens of schools.
Commissioners agreed to spend up to $160 million on a new E.E. Smith High School. Another $50 million will go to J.W. Coon Elementary. They set aside $300 million for additional construction work. The board passed this unanimously.
The school system had requested $610 million total, according to the CityView. Other items awaiting approval include a combined elementary and middle school in Stedman costing $40 million, another school near Ferguson-Easley Elementary at $40 million, and a $20 million classroom addition for Gray’s Creek High School.
