RIO RANCHO — Albertsons employees at the Ridgecrest Drive location voted to join the United Food and Commercial Workers Labor Union recently and will be negotiating their first contract this week.
According to Sylvianna Esquibel, a checker at the front of the store who is leading the effort, this is the first time in 10 years that every Albertsons department has voted to join the union. She said the employees’ struggles inspired her to start it.
“Do you know how often the turnover happens when employees are just not being paid well and not being treated well?” she said. “I was only going to work on the front end, but then the other departments heard about it, and they started coming to me and asking me if I would include them as well.”…
