Explosive Drone Discovered and Defused at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Raising New Security Concerns
BERLIN – Authorities at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany successfully defused a drone carrying explosives, prompting the temporary closure of the airport’s runways and raising alarm over emerging security threats. The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Tuesday when a flying object was spotted near the airport’s south runway, leading to the deployment of an anti-explosives robot.
An airport employee discovered the drone, which was found to be equipped with an unknown explosive device. Police safely removed the detonator from the drone, neutralizing the threat.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who cut short his vacation to respond to the situation, described the event as representing a “new quality of danger.” He emphasized that while drone sightings and threats have been seen before, the presence of an explosive-laden drone at an airport marks a significant escalation in security risks.
Dobrindt referred to the incident as a “hybrid attack scenario,” though he withheld further details and refrained from naming any suspects, noting that investigations remain ongoing. Saxony’s regional interior minister, Armin Schuster, indicated that authorities are searching for fragments of a potential second drone.
Complicating the situation, police and prosecutors reported that a second flying object apparently collided with a cargo plane attempting to abort its landing due to the runway closure. The plane diverted safely to Hannover Airport, where minor damage was discovered.
The airport’s north runway reopened after roughly two hours, while the south runway was scheduled for maintenance on Wednesday. Officials assured the public that no passengers or airport personnel were at risk and that daytime flights proceeded without interruption.
Leipzig/Halle Airport, a major cargo hub featuring Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft, has been the focus of security concerns in recent years. NATO acknowledged awareness of the incident but deferred to German authorities for further information.
This event echoes previous attacks linked to regional tensions, including a 2024 arson attack at the airport’s logistics center, suspected to be orchestrated by Russian intelligence, according to Western security officials. Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine over four years ago, Western nations have attributed numerous attacks and sabotage attempts across Europe to Russian-backed actors.
