1819 — Bates won the territorial congressional election. Arkansas Territory’s first major election contest ended August 6, when incumbent territorial delegate James Woodson Bates defeated Matthew Lyon. Lyon alleged that acting governor Robert Crittenden had manipulated the voting in Bates’s favor.
1836 — Thousands of Muscogee people began a forced-removal journey that later crossed Arkansas. More than 3,000 Creeks, now generally identified as Muscogee, left Alabama under federal supervision on August 6.
