CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A Marine recruit assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego has died after suffering a medical emergency during a routine physical fitness evaluation at Camp Pendleton, military officials announced Thursday.

According to the Marine Corps, the recruit experienced a medical emergency on Saturday, Aug. 1 while participating in a scheduled physical fitness evaluation at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The recruit was transported to Tri-city Medical Center in Oceanside, where they were pronounced dead on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Marine Corps officials said a medical review is also underway, in accordance with standard procedures.
Officials have not released the recruit’s identity, citing the need to notify their family.
