The City of San Diego will begin enforcing new electric bike regulations on Friday, joining Carlsbad and Chula Vista in adopting stricter rules for certain e-bike riders across the county.

The timing comes just before San Diego Unified students return to school next week, giving families the weekend to review the updated rules ahead of Monday’s commute.

Under San Diego’s ordinance — which was approved in June — children younger than 12 are no longer allowed to ride e-bikes. The regulations also strengthen existing helmet requirements and limit passengers to bikes specifically built with an additional seat for more than one rider…
