RICHFIELD, Utah – A heavy-lift helicopter engaged in battling a wildfire in central Utah crashed on Friday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Sikorsky S-64 helicopter was one of seven aircraft assisting with firefighting efforts on the blaze, which was sparked by lightning on July 27.
At this time, there is no update on the condition of the two individuals who were aboard the helicopter. Authorities, including the FAA, wildfire officials, and the Sevier County Sheriff’s office, have not released further details.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will launch an investigation into the crash. However, access to the crash site may be delayed due to ongoing wildfire activity in the area.
The wildfire has expanded to cover approximately 165 square miles and is currently 19% contained. Fire crews have been dealing with challenging conditions, including erratic winds, dry vegetation, high temperatures, and Red Flag warnings indicating the potential for dry thunderstorms and lightning.
