BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Goats and sheep play a significant role in reducing wildfire risks across California by eating up dry vegetation. Now Kern County leaders are looking to demand action from the state to save grazing operations from major reductions.
The Kern County Board of Supervisors is slated to meet Tuesday and vote on a resolution — and a letter to state officials — asking the state for “immediate legislative action” to prevent the annual salary for goat herders from increasing to $240,000, according to the meeting agenda.

The county is also looking to send a letter to the California Assembly and Senate, as well as Gov. Gavin Newsom and several other local lawmakers.
