LA MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 51-year-old man was hospitalized early Saturday morning after he was struck by a stray bullet that traveled through the wall of an apartment in La Mesa, police said.

According to to Lt. Scott Hildebrand with the La Mesa Police Department, officers received report of shots fired around 3:38 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 8400 block of Buckland Street.
When officers arrived, they found a 51-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. Investigators determined that a bullet appeared to have traveled from one apartment through a wall and into another unit, striking the victim.

The preliminary investigation indicates the man was not the intended target and was instead struck by a stray bullet, Hildebrand said.
Several officers began searching the area for the suspect. During the search, police believe the suspect pointed a firearm at officers before running from the area, according to Hildebrand.
