A tragic boating accident in New York Harbor on the night of August 8 resulted in the deaths of a 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old infant, according to the New York City Police Department.
Authorities were called to the scene near Liberty Island just before 11 p.m. after reports of a capsized boat. Emergency response teams, including scuba divers and an aviation unit, quickly arrived to assist.
Rescue efforts led to 12 individuals being pulled from the water, all of whom were transported to nearby hospitals with minor injuries, the New York City Fire Department confirmed.
The woman and infant were taken to NYU Langone Health in Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead. It has not been determined if the two were related.
Officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
