Carvel turns 90: Staten Islanders recall Brown Bonnets, Flying Saucers and Hylan Boulevard summers

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mention Carvel to a longtime Staten Islander and the memories come rushing back like a Carvelanche: bike rides to Hylan Boulevard, after-school treats, first summer jobs and birthday cakes topped with crunchies. As the ice cream chain celebrates its 90th anniversary, it’s leaning into that nostalgia while rolling out seasonal favorites and limited-time offerings.

The festivities began in May with the launch of a birthday-cake flavored lineup featuring soft serve, scooped ice cream, shakes, sundae dashers, Flying Saucers, ice cream pops and Carvelanches made with birthday cake crunchies and rainbow sprinkles.

Carvel has maintained a presence on Staten Island for decades. Its original borough location opened in Grasmere and continues to operate today, joined by several other storefronts across the Island…
