A man was found dead after being shot on the 3500 block of Liberty Boulevard in South Gate Saturday night, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Deputies say he was located at 9:40 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene. No suspect description or motive has been released as investigators continue piecing together what happened.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is assisting the South Gate Police Department with the investigation, as reported by MyNewsLA.com. That kind of joint effort is standard practice in the city — while South Gate maintains its own municipal police department, homicide cases there are routinely handled with specialized support from the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau, according to the Office of Inspector General County of Los Angeles. Formed in 1923, the bureau fields roughly 60 specialized detectives who handle hundreds of homicides, suspicious deaths, and officer-involved shootings each year across unincorporated areas and partner cities, per the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Where the Shooting Happened
The stretch of Liberty Boulevard where the man died is a mixed residential and commercial corridor near Long Beach Boulevard and California Avenue, home to multi-family housing alongside neighborhood businesses, including a 24-hour 7-Eleven at 3507 Liberty Boulevard. The city completed street grinding and asphalt resurfacing on that section of Liberty Boulevard between Long Beach Boulevard and California Avenue in late August 2025 as part of its Phase IV residential resurfacing project, according to the City of South Gate.
Violent crime on Liberty Boulevard itself is relatively rare by comparison to other corridors in the city, though the street was the site of a notable case decades ago: in 1996, an elderly couple was found fatally stabbed inside their home there, as documented by the Los Angeles Times at the time.
A City Grappling With Repeated Gun Violence
Saturday’s shooting adds to a string of deadly gun violence that has rattled South Gate over the past year. In June, Hoodline reported on a pre-dawn fatal shooting outside an Imperial Highway bar, and in December 2025, two men were killed in separate shootings on Tweedy Boulevard and Southern Avenue on the same day, according to CBS Los Angeles. South Gate, known as the Azalea City, is the 19th largest city in Los Angeles County, spanning 7.4 square miles in the Gateway Cities region with more than 91,000 residents, according to 2025 census estimates cited by Point2Homes…
