I’m writing on behalf of many concerned residents of Tthe Villages regarding the increasing prevalence of short-term rental properties, particularly those listed on platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO. These rentals are undermining the very foundation of our 55+ community, creating significant disruptions, overcrowding of amenities, and a decline in the overall quality of life for full-time residents.
Our community was designed and marketed as a haven for adults 55 and older, with an explicit requirement that 80% of residents meet this age criterion. However, short-term rentals are introducing a transient population—often much younger—that is neither invested in nor aligned with the culture, rules, and expectations of our community. As a result, we are experiencing:
Disruptions and Security Concerns – The transient nature of these renters creates an unpredictable environment, with increased noise levels, traffic, and unfamiliar faces regularly coming and going.
