A 24-year-old man walked up to Chicago Police officers around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of West Ferdinand Street, near LeClaire Avenue, to tell them he had been shot multiple times throughout his body. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in fair condition as detectives opened an investigation into how he ended up wounded on a South Austin street before dawn.
According to CBS News, the man was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the county’s primary trauma center, while Chicago Police Department Harrison Area detectives took over the case. It remains unclear whether the shooting was targeted or a drive-by, and police have not said whether they’ve identified suspects or recovered surveillance footage from the Ferdinand Street area.
A Neighborhood With a Violent Summer
The Ferdinand Street shooting is the latest in a series of overnight gun violence incidents that have hit South Austin this summer. Four weeks earlier, on July 12, a 14-year-old boy was shot multiple times at 1:23 a.m. in the 5500 block of West Van Buren Street before taking himself to Loretto Hospital and being transferred to Stroger Hospital in fair condition, as Hoodline reported at the time. That case, too, fell under the jurisdiction of Harrison Area detectives, who are headquartered at 3151 W. Harrison St., per Police1.
Earlier in the summer, on June 8, a drive-by shooting in the 0-100 block of North Lockwood Avenue left a 34-year-old man dead and three other men injured after a shooter inside an SUV opened fire on a group standing on the sidewalk, the station’s report noted. Witnesses at the time reported hearing heavy gunfire along the sidewalk. Together, the three incidents paint a picture of a neighborhood contending with repeated overnight violence just weeks apart.
Austin’s Shooting Rate and Safety Concerns
The pattern tracks with broader data on the Austin community area.
