Data center drama: Eastover sends a letter to Fayetteville. | Opinion

Eastover residents are among many in Cumberland County who seek a pause or full stop on data centers. And it looks like they have their town leaders behind them.

No doubt, that’s partly because the town of 3,600 residents faces an immediate threat in that a project has been named for their area. Specifically, Terra Nexus Ventures, a private equity real estate company out of Charlotte, has submitted plans for a 300-megawatt facility on Custer Avenue.  That size would qualify as a hyperscale center, which are the ones people are worried about because of their large-scale power demand.

The data center site would encompass 180 acres, according to plans the company submitted to the city of Fayetteville. The location would be near the Fayetteville Public Works Commission’s power generation plant, and, though technically outside of Eastover town limits, would basically be a part of the town, according to leaders…
