Remains of missing New Caney women recovered in woods near her home

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) – Authorities have recovered human remains believed to belong to Maria Ortiz, a New Caney resident who went missing last month.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, alongside Montgomery County Search and Rescue, located the remains Sunday in a wooded area near Ortiz’s home—the same area where she was last seen.

Ortiz, who family members said suffered from memory and confusion issues, was reported missing on July 20, 2026, after leaving her home in the Oak Knoll area on foot.

While official identification through dental records is expected later this week, investigators say preliminary findings are consistent with Ortiz. At this time, detectives do not suspect foul play, and say preliminary evidence suggests she may have died of natural causes…
