142 new fires reported nationwide on Monday, including 12 new large fires

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — A surge of new wildfires kept firefighters stretched across the country as the National Preparedness Level held at its highest point.

The National Interagency Fire Center says that 142 new fires were reported nationwide on Monday, August 10, including 12 new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 104 uncontained large fires. The National Preparedness Level remains at 5, with nearly 30,000 personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

The Northwest remains the nation’s most active fire area, with 45 uncontained large fires, according to NIFC. Fires including Wrights Spring, Little Giant, Big Grass and Sinlahekin continue to exhibit active or extreme fire behavior, with evacuations and closures in effect and homes, communities and critical infrastructure threatened…
