HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – A Huntsville defense company demonstrated an anti-drone laser system this week, offering an up-close look at technology designed to defend against unmanned aerial threats facing both military personnel and civilians.
The system, called Firefly, was developed by KBR. Attendees were required to wear laser-protection goggles before the demonstration began.
How the system works
Firefly uses sensors and AI-assisted targeting to detect and track drones. During the demonstration, observers were shown a live feed of what the system sees as it identifies and follows a target.
“This is a homegrown product — you know, I think often we can look at the work that happens in Huntsville, you see Redstone, you see all the traffic and everything and you kinda have to wonder what’s going on over there. Well, it’s protecting the people and this is one of the methods that we’re doing it,” said David Zoller with KBR.
