Several gardeners in Secaucus, New Jersey, began noticing something strange in August 2025. Vegetables they had spent weeks growing in community garden plots were suddenly disappearing, with tomatoes and eggplants among the missing produce.
At first, there was some uncertainty about what was happening. A missing vegetable could easily be blamed on an animal, especially in an outdoor garden, but the pattern soon suggested something much more deliberate.
The First Gardeners Realized Something Was Wrong
The first reports came from the Imagine Garden off Meadowlands Parkway. Multiple gardeners told Suzanne Barnes, who works with the town’s park patrol, that vegetables had been taken from their plots.
The gardeners weren’t simply annoyed about losing a few vegetables. They had rented their garden spaces, planted the crops themselves and spent time caring for them, only to discover that someone else was helping themselves to the harvest.
