It’s one thing to get a dirty look for cutting through a nice neighborhood. It’s another thing to have a private security vehicle pull up beside you and demand “resident ID” while you’re jogging down what you believe is a normal public street.
That’s the situation an Austin runner described in the original post, after he said he was stopped mid-run inside a wealthy development that looked open from at least one entrance—only to later learn, through county records, that the roads were public and county-owned.
A long training run turned into an ID check
According to the runner’s account, he was out on a longer route for marathon prep when he entered a new, “really nice” development through what he described as a side entrance connected to another neighborhood. He noticed license plate readers (LPRs) and other cameras at the corner where he came in, but kept going, planning to loop through and head back to the main road.
About a mile into the neighborhood, he said a private security vehicle approached. The guard started friendly, asking how the run was going, but then asked the runner to display a resident ID. The runner told the guard he didn’t live there and was “just on a run.”
