KITSAP COUNTY, Wash. — The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is dismantling and recycling aging boats across the state to prevent environmental damage to Puget Sound, with 27 vessels currently in state possession in Kitsap County as part of the ongoing effort.
Salvage crews are demolishing the boats on land, a process officials say keeps fuel, sewage, heavy metals and plastics out of the water.
One of the vessels being dismantled, a 31-foot boat called the “Fish Tale,” was voluntarily surrendered by owner Michael Razmek, who had once hoped to restore the 1971 boat to its original condition. But repair costs would have exceeded the boat’s value, and he was unable to get it insured…
