Tukwila Police are asking the public to help identify a suspect who walked into a department store, grabbed a handful of coats, and left, in what investigators describe as another case of organized retail crime. Detective Mosley, the department’s dedicated Retail Emphasis Detective, is seeking tips from anyone who recognizes the individual involved.
The department shared the appeal in a Facebook post Friday, framing the theft as part of a broader problem rather than an isolated shoplifting incident. According to Tukwila Police Department on Facebook, organized retail crime offenders like the one being sought often commit thefts up and down Interstate 5 and across numerous states, reselling stolen merchandise online, at swap meets, and elsewhere in the region. Police say they will work with regional partners as they continue trying to identify the person responsible.
Tukwila officials say organized retail crime is often intertwined with other serious offenses, including stolen motor vehicles, strong-arm robberies, narcotics, and firearms, per the department’s post. Offenders frequently flee recklessly in vehicles that are themselves stolen, and police say suspects are often aggressive or violent toward store employees, at times assaulting officers or resisting arrest when taken into custody.
A Detective Built for This Exact Problem
Detective Mosley’s role did not exist in its current form until earlier this year. In March, the Tukwila Police Department designated Mosley as its dedicated Retail Emphasis Detective, a position created specifically to partner with local business loss-prevention personnel and pursue organized retail crime throughout the city, according to Tukwila PD News.
