Man arrested after leading high-speed chase, crashing into semi on I-80

DES MOINES, Iowa — Authorities say a Des Moines man was arrested after he led a high-speed police pursuit and crashed into a semi along Interstate 80.

The Des Moines Police Department arrested 49-year-old Oscar Gipson of Des Moines on Saturday and booked him into the Polk County Jail. He is charged with;

  • Eluding – Over 25 MPH Over Speed Limit (Class D Felony)
  • Felon In Possession Of A Firearm (Class D Felony)
  • Controlled Substance Violation (Class D Felony)
  • Failure To Affix Drug Tax Stamp (Class D Felony)
  • Assault Causing Injury (Serious Misdemeanor)
  • False Imprisonment (Serious Misdemeanor)

Des Moines Police say shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the city’s west side to investigate reports of a domestic-related assault of an adult woman. According to the victim, Gipson had physically assaulted her and refused to let her leave his home.

A short time later, officers attempted a traffic stop as Gipson was driving in the 3300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Authorities say Gipson refused to stop and continued, leading DMPD officers on a pursuit that ended on I-80.

Court records state that during the pursuit, Gipson drove approximately 120 mph, double the posted speed limit of 60 mph, and weaved in and out of lanes near other vehicles. Police say the pursuit ended after Gipson crashed into the back of a semi-truck…
