Schoolhouse No. 12 is one of Lake Township’s most treasured historic landmarks. Located at the corner of King Church Avenue and Lake Center Street in Uniontown, the restored one-room schoolhouse offers visitors a glimpse into 19th-century education and the community’s history.
For the past four years, the Lake Township Historical Society has hosted regular open house tours of the building throughout the spring and summer. The final tour of the season is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. Aug. 30.
During the Aug. 13 tour, board member Lexi Pearson said the society typically welcomes eight to 10 visitors, although attendance has reached 25 during special art shows featuring work by Lake Local School students.
The schoolhouse was established about 1850 and closed in 1928. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The one-room school served generations of local students during an era when a single teacher taught all eight grades under one roof.
