Birmingham-filmed movie ‘The Rivals of Amiziah King’ grosses over $1M in opening weekend

The Rivals of Amiziah King, the highly-acclaimed movie (89% on Rotten Tomatoes) filmed in the Birmingham-metro area starring Matthew McConaughey grossed over $1 million domestically this weekend in the U.S.

The crime thriller, which also features Kurt Russell and newcomer Angelina LookingGlass, opened on August 14 at 632 locations, according to The Numbers.

What did the film contribute to Birmingham’s economy?

Film Birmingham told Bham Now earlier this month the major motion picture was filmed in residences all over the Birmingham-metro area and at the following places:

  • Oakmont-Chapel Presbyterian Church in Hoover
  • Kelly Ingram VFW Post 668 near The BJCC
  • A Birmingham City Recreation Center
  • 7th Avenue North in downtown Birmingham
  • J&J Grocery in Bessemer

In total, the production crew and actors spend two months in Birmingham contributing about $10 million to the local economy…
