Calumet County uses goats to clear invasive plants

The Calumet County Parks Department has deployed a herd of goats to Calumet County Park in Hilbert to help with invasive species management.

Ash Smith, a building attendant for Calumet County Parks Department, said that while she didn’t know the exact head count of goats in Calumet Park, the goats are proving to be good at controlling invasive plant species, such as Buckthorn, Phragmites, Dame’s Rocket and Garlic Mustard.

The goats are not physically fenced in, but are deployed with GPS collars that Smith said “work like dog collars.”…
