ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As police piece together what led up to a man being shot to death in the middle of an Albuquerque road, new video shows the moments leading up to the incident. Albuquerque police say Charles Richards shot and killed Dominic Hernandez outside of a smoke shop near Central and Louisiana. But as detectives question Richards, he said he didn’t do it.

Richards: “I didn’t shoot nobody.”Detective: “Okay.”Richards: “I didn’t shoot nothing. And you guys are pointing the finger at me because I’m black and that’s the way it is.”Detective: “No, we’re here because you’re on video and it looks like you have a gun.”
Security camera footage shows Richards appearing to be chasing a man. Hernandez can be seen going into the Smoke City Shop on Central to evade Richards. Later, after speaking with Richards, a group of men go inside the shop and appear to force Hernandez to go outside, setting off another chase. Richards appears to be holding a gun, though he told detectives he only owns a BB gun. Moments later, police say Shot Spotter was alerted as witnesses confirm they heard gunshots. Soon after, Hernandez is found with deadly gunshot wounds in the middle of the road.
Time and time again throughout the interview, detectives ask Richards the same question, and his answer is the same every time…
