Where is today’s flood and severe storm threat centered, and how does it connect to last week’s deadly flooding. The threat runs across the Ohio Valley, Central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic starting this afternoon, hitting many of the same areas that were already saturated by the storms that killed at least seven people in Indiana over the past week.

A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk covers southeastern Ohio, eastern Kentucky, much of West Virginia and southwest Virginia this afternoon and evening. Forecasters expect rain rates between 1 and 2 inches an hour in the strongest storms, a pace that can overwhelm streams and low lying roads quickly when the ground beneath them is already full. The Northeast, by contrast, should see rain clear through the morning, with lingering clouds and only isolated non severe showers expected into the afternoon…
