Sanford Health master plan shows vast possibilities for central Sioux Falls campus

Construction officially kicked off last week on the latest addition to the campus of Sanford USD Medical Center: a two-story, 52,000-square-foot Medical Building 4, which will be on the northeast corner of 21st Street and Grange Avenue, directly east of Medical Building 1.

The building will focus on dermatology and plastic surgery, while freeing up space in the Talley Building on campus, where USD School of Medicine’s M.D. program is moving.

“As we think about strategy and being in central Sioux Falls and having services connected, that’s going to continue to be our strategy,” said Andy Munce, president and CEO of Sanford’s Sioux Falls region.

The new building, scheduled to be complete by late 2027, is the first of seemingly endless possibilities to further expand on the central Sioux Falls campus, which a new plan shows eventually could span from roughly 16th to 26th streets and from West to Prairie avenues.

Across the campus, “we are having conversations about 25, 40, 50 years and what that could look like. … It won’t be the immediate future,” Munce said. We’re focusing on the core footprint right now. But … we looked at ensuring we have the correct zoning criteria and plan as we would grow.”

The health system submitted an updated PUD, or planned unit development, to the city of Sioux Falls this spring…
