The South is home to some of the most famous golf courses in the country, from historic championship courses to beautiful coastal courses that golfers travel from around the world to play.
I’ve grown up around the game and have a deep appreciation for the courses that have helped make Southern golf so special. From Florida to Texas and everywhere in between, these are the courses that stand out in the South for their history, design, scenery, and tournaments they’ve hosted.
Pinehurst No. 2
Pinehurst, North Carolina
Located in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Pinehurst No. 2 is one of the most legendary golf courses in the South and in the entire country. Designed by Donald Ross, the course has hosted more golf championships than any other course in the United States and was named the first official U.S. Open anchor site. For golfers hoping to play it, access is limited to club members and overnight guests at Pinehurst Resort. A round comes with a hefty price tag, and tee times can book up well in advance, so planning ahead is a must.
