The scam begins with a call from someone claiming to represent a financial institution. The caller tells the victim their information was used to open an account to purchase illegal firearms, the FBI said in a press release.

The victim is then transferred to someone claiming to be an FBI special agent investigating the alleged fraud. The scammer may ask the victim to verify the phone number before the call disconnects…
