Demolition of Southwestern Junior High continues

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — An abandoned, 100-year-old school is being torn down.

Demolition of Southwestern Junior High started in July and continued Thursday after Battle Creek Public Schools said it had to come down due to public safety concerns. In November, school officials hosted an array of community members on a final walkthrough.

The school’s last class attended in 2006 after opening in 1928. After its last class, the building had been subject to vandalism and fires.

In its heyday the school boasted a unique construction that featured a swimming pool, an auditorium that seated hundreds, and a bell tower where bands would play for the entire neighborhood…
