Father accused of killing 14-year-old daughter deemed competent to stand trial

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The father accused of killing his 14-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old brother will stand trial next year after his attorney previously requested a mental status evaluation.

A doctor determined that 41-year-old Levy Nelson is currently competent to stand trial during Thursday’s hearing in a Richmond court. A four-day jury trial for his charges in the deaths of his daughter Sadie Terry and her brother Zion Terry, along with the shooting of their mother Tiffany Terry, is set to begin April 19, 2027.

The siblings were students at Richmond Public Schools.

Richmond police officers were called to the family’s home on 5th Avenue on April 21, where they found all three victims shot. Nelson was arrested after a manhunt that day. He faces nine charges in Richmond City Circuit Court:

  • Two counts of aggravated murder of multiple persons
  • One count of possession of a firearm
  • Two counts of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • One count of malicious assault with the victim injured
  • One count of shooting/stabbing in the commission of a felony
  • One count of child abuse with disregard for life
  • One count of felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
