GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Today is a First Alert Weather Day as widespread showers and thunderstorms move into the Western Carolinas Friday afternoon and evening, bringing locally heavy rain and an isolated flash flooding threat. A few storms pack strong winds as a cold front slides through the region.
But here’s the good news. On the back side of the front, drier, less humid air takes over starting Sunday, bringing you a pleasant stretch of weather to kick off the new week.
Friday: FIRST ALERT — Storms Arrive This Evening
More showers and thunderstorms develop across the area starting in the afternoon, with heaviest activity expected between 5 p.m. and midnight.
Some storms could pack damaging wind gusts, so monitor First Alert Weather updates throughout the day.
Here’s what to watch:
- Heavy rain threat: Localized downpours produce rainfall between a quarter and half-inch, with the highest rain amounts across near the Blue Ridge Escarpment. Some spots could see up to 3″ of rain
- Damaging straight-line winds: any storms we see could produce winds capable of knocking down trees and powerlines
- Timing: Main storm threat peaks Friday evening through midnight
- Upstate: Highs are in the mid to upper 80s but its very humid
- Mountains: Cooler conditions with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s
What you should do: Move outdoor plans indoors before 5 p.m. Check on outdoor equipment and pets. Secure anything the wind could move. Stay tuned to First Alert Weather throughout the day for live radar and storm tracking.
The storms wind down into the early hours of Saturday. Lows dip into the mid to upper 60s.
Saturday: Spotty Storms Linger
The cold front progresses through the area but linger just close enough to give us a chance for a few afternoon showers and storms.
The storms are few and far between, so there’s no need to cancel any outdoor plans. Otherwise, it’s mostly sunny. Highs are in the mid to upper 80s. It’s still rather humid, but the humidity starts to drop overnight. This allows temperatures to drop into the mid to upper 60s for the Upstate and the upper 50s to low 60s in the mountains overnight.
Sunday Through Tuesday: Sunny, Less Humid
We are in for some gorgeous late August weather to wrap up the weekend and head into next week. Sunny skies dominate, humidity drops, and temperatures are right around seasonal norms.
Highs are in the upper 80s for the Upstate each afternoon, with highs in the low to mid 80s in the mountains. Overnight lows are in the mid to upper 60s for the Upstate and the upper 50s to the low 60s for the mountains making for some very comfortable mornings…
