Iryna Zarutska’s family files wrongful-death lawsuit after her murder on Charlotte train

The family of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who was stabbed to death aboard a Charlotte light-rail train, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit on Friday.

The 33-page complaint accuses the city and its security contractor of failing to protect her despite a history of violence on the transit system.

It names the city of Charlotte and Professional Police Services Inc., which provided security for the Charlotte Area Transit System, and alleges officials knew violent crime had repeatedly occurred on and around the LYNX Blue Line, but failed to provide adequate staffing, fare enforcement, physical barriers, and monitoring.

“[The] defendants were responsible for protecting lawful passengers from known and foreseeable dangers, and their failures caused the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska inside the train,” according to the lawsuit…
