Four suspects are in custody after a Chicago Police Department surveillance camera operator spotted them robbing victims in Grant Park early Tuesday morning. Officers tracked the getaway car to Chinatown and arrested the crew as they tried to escape on the Red Line.
Shortly after 3 a.m., patrol officers interrupted an auto theft in progress near Sedgwick and Evergreen in Old Town. The thieves sped away, leaving the other vehicle behind with its doors open.
But CPD continued to track the getaway car electronically as it headed south on Lake Shore Drive. When the suspects reached Monroe Street at 3:15 a.m., they targeted a couple walking in the area. A police spokesperson said the victims, a 21-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, were in the 300 block of East Monroe Street when four men approached them.
