She didn’t plan it that way, but Cleveland Kosher Food Pantry Executive Director Sarah Alevsky had more than one reason to celebrate at the Aug. 14 “smashing the walls” of an old building that paves the way for the food pantry’s new home.

The 11 a.m. ceremony fell on the first day of Elul, so Rabbi Yessi Alevsky, of Cleveland’s Downtown Chabad blew the shofar, then led the singing of “Happy birthday” to his mother and food pantry Director Emeritus Devorah Alevsky before the program began.
“It’s the beginning of a new month and a season of renewal,” Sarah Alevsky told several dozen attendees. “We look at what needs to be changed and that’s literally what we’re doing here today.”
