The Harlem Post was a local weekly newspaper printed in German for the local German population. Its first edition was published on Sept. 12, 1895. The paper’s Aug. 19, 1897 edition included the following news about an excursion of the Harlem Women’s Club:
On Saturday, the Harlem Women’s Club, in conjunction with another excursion group, took a trip to the magnificent Pottawatomie Park near St. Charles on the Great Western Railway.
Although the sky looked rather gloomy that morning, the club members — along with their companions and friends — were undeterred; led by their active president, Mrs. Albert Roos, they set out, hoping that the weather gods would ultimately smile upon them. This wish was then granted over the course of the day. Upon arrival in St. Charles — whose romantic setting delighted all the participants — a lively bustle soon broke out among the excursionists. Chas. Miller, as well as Leo and William Haase, had their hands full and seemed to be truly in their element. In the evening, the party returned home in a separate railway carriage, having enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant day…
