‘The Past Shall Rise:’ Homeland Center’s 160-year history comes alive

Homeland Center will host a theatrical walking tour at Harrisburg Cemetery & Arboretum on Sept. 19 to commemorate the women who established the organization nearly 160 years ago.

Nine actors will portray nine people – eight women and one man – connected to the founding of the “Home for the Friendless” in 1867 during “The Past Shall Rise,” a theatrical experience from 3 to 5 p.m. at the cemetery located at 521 N. 13th St. in Harrisburg.

Actors will present monologues at gravesites, sharing the stories of the people who created the home in response to hardship faced by widows and children after the Civil War. Women representing nine Harrisburg churches organized and raised funds to establish what became Homeland Center…
