A heated dispute between WNBA guard Natasha Cloud and former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has escalated beyond the court and into the digital sphere, drawing intense reactions from fans and commentators alike.
The conflict reignited after Cloud shared several TikTok videos criticizing Kanter Freedom and supporters of Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham. The posts followed a contentious incident during Sunday’s game at Wintrust Arena, which led to Kanter Freedom’s removal and an indefinite ban from the venue.
Kanter Freedom was escorted out after asserting he was standing up for women’s rights, while also campaigning against transgender athletes participating in women’s sports. During the game, he wore a black shirt emblazoned with the phrase “WOMAN noun. adult human female,” underscoring his position. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Dream bolstered their roster by adding DeWanna Bonner to enhance their playoff prospects.
Conservative commentator Jon Root, writing for OutKick, criticized Cloud’s social media shares and highlighted Kanter Freedom’s background, including his recent U.S. citizenship after fleeing Turkey amid serious threats. Root condemned Cloud as “an awful woman” for allegedly shaming female athletes who support women’s sports.
The confrontation reportedly involved heated exchanges. Kanter Freedom claimed Cloud shouted profanities at him and dismissed Cunningham’s alleged rebuff of his advances. In response, Cloud affirmed her support for transgender youth, pledging they would “always be protected” by her.
Chicago Sky owner Michael Alter issued a firm stance, banning Kanter Freedom indefinitely from Wintrust Arena. Alter described Kanter Freedom’s presence as provocative and attention-seeking, citing social media posts during the game, including one taken in front of a women’s restroom. He stated Kanter Freedom would only be allowed back if he demonstrated an ability to adhere to the organization’s rules without posing a threat.
In turn, Kanter Freedom threatened legal action against the Sky, demanded a refund for his ticket, and called on the WNBA to investigate Cloud. The league continues to clarify that neither he nor Royce White is eligible for the 2027 NBA Draft, following their requests.
Adding another layer to the controversy, Kanter Freedom’s appearance was promoted by the America First Policy Institute, linked to former President Donald Trump, which also markets “Let Freedom Play” merchandise. This nonprofit was founded by U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.
Two days after the incident, Cloud returned to the court, contributing three points and four assists in 16 minutes during Chicago’s narrow 87-81 loss to the Connecticut Sun. The defeat dropped the Sky to a 15-24 record, ending their playoff hopes for the season.
