Cedar Hill’s biggest party of the year is back for its 89th run, and this time around it comes with a beans-and-cornbread supper, a round of bingo, and a parade rolling through Historic Downtown Cedar Hill. Country Day on the Hill kicks off October 9, with the Old Settlers Reunion, followed by the full festival on October 10, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
According to the City of Cedar Hill, Texas – Government, the event is one of the city’s longest-running and most-loved traditions, and organizers are billing it once again as Cedar Hill’s biggest celebration of the year. The two-day gathering traces back to 1937, when it began as an informal post-harvest meetup where local farming families traded goods and caught up on the town square, according to Tour Texas. Nearly nine decades later, it now draws an estimated 10,000 attendees to the historic district each year, per Friends of Country Day, Inc., making it one of the largest community traditions in the Best Southwest region that also includes DeSoto, Duncanville, and Lancaster.
Friday Night: Supper, Bingo, and a Crowning
The Old Settlers Reunion opens the weekend Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Historic Downtown Cedar Hill, per the city’s Facebook post. A light supper of beans, cornbread, tea, and dessert costs $5 a plate, and bingo runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at $5 per card, with additional cards going for $1 each.
The evening also includes the crowning of the Country Day King and Queen, a ceremony that ties directly into the festival’s identity as a celebration of long-running local heritage.
