Afton man in custody, charged following Nelson County barricade situation

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – An Afton man is in custody and was charged Thursday following a welfare check that led to what the department says was a “barricade situation” in Nelson County, according to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Michael Wayne Scott is in jail without bond; he was charged with:

  • Abduction
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Possession of a firearm after having been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility
  • Reckless Handling of a Firearm

About 7:41 a.m. Aug. 27, deputies responded to the 2300 block of Afton Mountain Road in Afton to perform a welfare check. A neighbor requested one after hearing screaming from inside the home, deputies said.

Deputies went onto the property. A gunshot was heard from inside the home, which resulted in law enforcement taking cover outside the premises, according to the department.

“Within minutes, a female exited the front door of the home and took safety with the deputies on scene,” personnel said…
