Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for U.S. Users Following Presidential Order
In a recent move reflecting a presidential directive, Google Maps now displays “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario” for users accessing the map within the United States. This change follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last Thursday, which officially renamed the lake that straddles northern New York and southern Ontario.
According to Google, the update aligns with changes made by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the federal government’s official repository for place names.
As a result, Americans using Google Maps will see the new designation, while Canadian users will continue to see “Lake Ontario.” Users outside North America will see both names displayed.
The renaming has sparked mixed reactions, particularly given the broader context of escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada. The Trump administration recently imposed a 50% tariff on various Canadian goods, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada. Discussions remain ongoing, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford warning that such tariffs could ultimately harm American consumers.
Not all mapping services have followed suit. Apple Maps continues to use “Lake Ontario,” and MapQuest garnered attention for refusing to change the lake’s name, even inviting users to label the lake as they wish. MapQuest’s stance resonated widely on social media, highlighting the divergent responses among mapping platforms.
Adding historical perspective, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the lake’s original name derives from the Wendat word “Ontari’io,” meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,” underscoring the cultural significance of the traditional name.
This is not the first instance of such renaming efforts by the current administration. Shortly after taking office, President Trump also renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” a change reflected in Google Maps due to its policy of mirroring GNIS records.
