An Irish couple vacationing in Spain tragically died from cardiac arrest after becoming trapped in the hot tub of their holiday villa near Valencia, authorities have confirmed.
Thomasina and Patrick Tobin were found unresponsive in the outdoor hot tub at their rental property in Cullera last Tuesday. Postmortem examinations indicate both suffered fatal heart failure, likely triggered by extreme physical exhaustion and acute stress during a desperate effort to free themselves. Investigators are also considering the possibility that one of them may have been electrocuted, with the other succumbing while attempting a rescue.
According to the local publication Las Provincias, preliminary findings suggest the couple’s cardiac arrests were caused by the intense strain of the situation. Initial concerns over foul play-sparked by scratches and marks on their bodies-were quickly dismissed after thorough investigation.
The Tobins, who lived in London and had two teenage children, had been staying at the villa in the upscale Cap Blanc development for up to two weeks. Thomasina, 51, was a quantity surveyor originally from Castleblayney, County Monaghan, and her husband Patrick, 48, was from New Zealand.
The couple’s children discovered their parents in the hot tub and raised the alarm. Authorities later examined the hot tub multiple times, including with the assistance of an industrial hot tub expert, to assess whether a malfunction in the hydro-massage suction fittings might have trapped the Tobins underwater.
Investigators believe that a powerful suction effect from the hot tub’s jets ensnared the couple, leading to a frantic struggle to escape. The scratches on their bodies are now understood to have been sustained during their attempts to free each other, not from external violence.
Thomasina came from a prominent artistic family in Monaghan. Her father, Tommy McArdle, is a well-known playwright and producer, famous for his work directing the Irish television drama Glenroe. Thomasina herself was a Trinity College Dublin graduate who worked on major UK projects such as London’s Ritz Hotel and The Shard.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular support to the family but did not comment further on the case.
