Asheville City Council approved changes to the city’s Unified Development Ordinance on Aug. 25 that expand where duplexes may be built, increase the maximum permitted size of accessory dwelling units and remove off-street parking requirements. The amendments change rules governing residential development across Asheville.
Duplexes are now allowed in every residential district under the amended ordinance. The change also permits duplexes in certain mixed-use districts, extending that housing option beyond areas reserved exclusively for residential development.
The duplex amendment applies broadly across the city’s residential zoning districts rather than limiting that building type to selected neighborhoods.
