NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man has died and a suspect is in custody following a hit-and-run in Newport News, police say.
On Aug. 19, officers were called to the intersection of Dresden Drive and Kendall Drive for the report of a crash. When officers arrived on scene, they located 60-year-old Jonathan Jones suffering from life-threatening injuries. He later died on Friday.
NNPD: License plate reader assisted in finding hit-and-run suspect vehicle
After investigating, it was determined Jones was operating a moped when he was struck by a pick up truck. The truck driver did not remain on scene.
With the assistance of license plate readers, police later located and arrested 53-year-old Louis Petteway. He faces the following charges:
- Accident: Driver not report, w/death/injury/damage
- Driving without a license, 2nd or greater offense
