Former Watertown housing director agrees to repay more than $6,200 in stolen funds

BOSTON (WWLP) – The former executive director of the Watertown Housing Authority has agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud after allegedly using more than $6,200 in housing authority funds to help pay for renovations to his home.

Michael Lara, 41, of Norwood, was charged with one count of wire fraud and has entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Under the agreement, Lara will repay more than $6,200 to the Watertown Housing Authority, resign from his current position as executive director of the Newton Housing Authority and refrain from committing a new violation of federal criminal law for six months.

According to court filings, Lara served as the executive director of the Watertown Housing Authority, as well as president of the Watertown Housing Development Corporation and WHDC Holdings, LLC, from July 2019 through January 2025…
