WILMINGTON, N.C. (WBTV) – A disabled kitten took its first steps last week thanks to a Lego wheelchair built by a North Carolina store employee.
Michael Hawley, an employee at a specialty Lego store in Wilmington, used his building skills to construct a custom wheelchair for Rex, a 4-month-old rescue kitten. Rex has cerebellar hypoplasia — a neurological condition known as “wobbly-cat syndrome” — and has never been able to walk.
“He was pretty unresponsive when they got him,” said Jennifer Witkowski of the rescue group Miles To Go, who was cat-sitting Rex at the time. “They started treating him, and he slowly regained movement.”
While Rex needed a wheelchair, traditional models are expensive. Witkowski of Rescue estimated a standard chair would cost $1,800 — an expense the growing kitten would outgrow in just a month and a half…
