Clark County residents in a dozen ZIP codes can start requesting a free tree this week, ahead of a countywide giveaway that opens to everyone Thursday, Sept. 3, at 8 a.m. PDT.
The 2,300 trees are being distributed through the Community Canopy Project, a partnership between Clark County Environment & Sustainability and the Arbor Day Foundation aimed at cooling neighborhoods hit hardest by the urban heat island effect — the phenomenon in which pavement, rooftops and a lack of tree cover push local temperatures well above surrounding areas. The initiative falls under the county’s larger Stay Cool Clark County program.
Until the countywide launch, free trees are reserved for residents of ZIP codes 89014, 89121, 89119, 89103, 89154, 89169, 89030, 89147, 89039, 89046, 89028, and 89029, areas the county has identified as especially vulnerable to extreme heat. Residents in those areas can request a tree now through the Arbor Day Foundation. Once the giveaway opens countywide, any Clark County resident becomes eligible and can choose from species that include Chinese pistache, Elberta peach, Russian pomegranate, and southern live oak.
